Shalanda Young '99 named first Black woman to head up the White House Office of Management and Budget

Shalanda Young '99

Baton Rouge native, Loyola alumna, Presidential Management Fellow, mother, first Black woman to be appointed director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) -- Shalanda Young has made impressive strides in her career since graduating with a with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Loyola in 1999. Her appointment to the Cabinet-level position came with bipartisan support and backing by the Congressional Black Caucus, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and her entire House Democratic leadership team.

Linking faith with justice is one of the twelve ideals of a Jesuit education that we hold dear at Loyola University New Orleans. When reflecting on this principle, Father Justin Daffron said, "If our faith isn’t compelling us to help address the injustices around us, we might want to consider if it is really faith at all. Clearly, the time is now, for us to challenge ourselves and our Loyola community to pursue a faith that does justice which elevates the human dignity of all people." In her new role, Young will have the opportunity to further bring this Jesuit ideal to life while implementing the President’s vision across the Executive Branch.
